BRITTON RESIDENCE: Solar and Wind Hybrid System The Britton Residence features a state of the art Solar / Wind Hybrid System that includes a 2.180kW Solar PV array and the first of its kind 1kW UGE Grid-Tied Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) on a residential application in Chicago. The 1kW UGE VAWT is anticipated to produce 2000kwh of electricity per year assuming an average wind speed of 12mph with the potential for 4500kwh’s in higher wind averages. Not affected by the direction of the wind, VAWT’s make good use of wind in areas where the wind changes direction frequently or quickly, and ideal for rural, suburban and urban applications, including rooftop installations. The Solar PV array is expected to produce a little over 210kwh a month or 2500+ kwh per year. The Solar PV system has built-in online monitoring that allows the homeowner to see real time data on the energy production of the system. In addition the ability to monitor each individual module for quick diagnostics. The cost of Britton’s renewable energy systems was made affordable with a 30% State Rebates and 30% Federal Tax Credits for renewable energy systems. Besides the financial benefits, these systems allow Britton to reduce her environmental impact by offsetting 18895 pounds of carbon emissions per year that is equivalent to burning about 974 gallons of gasoline. This Hybrid system is anticipated to off-set 90-100% of annual electric usage for the homeowner, making the Britton Residence potentially a …

Hi Jeff,
I talked to Mike this morning on Skype (which is genius by the way instead of tying up phone lines) and you guys friggin rock. From the prices to the information ya’ll know your stuff by heart and aren’t out to rip off customers from what I can tell. Most places that have your level of equipment charge between $30 -$45,000 for a complete package. People like me are out to save money by using alternative energy, not spend 20 years getting your expenses back. Thanx and talk 2 u soon

@mojoeshaw You cannot hear them outside at all. This is a commercial steel building and the wind turbines are connected to the rapters with no rubber pads behind the tower pipe. The ceiling is steel also. There’s really nothing in the building to absorb any of the noise, like carpet. So the sound resenates through the rafters inside, usually it’s just a light humming noise inside. I am going to put rubber pads behind the pipe, just havent gotten around to it.

What’s funny and disturbing at the same time, is we can hear your turbines in the background like interstate traffic noise going by. Might piss off a few neighbors even out in the country where we’re moving to.

Ok, good job. Now I need a video of what to do after this. For example, if I want to just connect this to my grid or make it run a space heater in the winter. Please keep it simple.
