NYIT Energy Conference to Focus on “Off the Grid” Technologies for Power, Water, and Shelter
Old Westbury, NY (PRWEB) June 05, 2012
From well-equipped emergency shelters to rescue operations with alternative power sources and new water purification methods, New York Institute of Technology’s 2012 Energy Conference promises a comprehensive look at what it means to be “off the grid” in developed and developing nations.
The June 13 conference at the NYIT de Seversky Mansion will feature 11 experts and three panels on power, water, and shelter. With an interdisciplinary and global approach, panelists will touch on architecture, engineering, and social approaches to energy-related issues from developed areas like Long Island to the rural countryside of Ghana and Haiti.
“The impact of natural disasters on power, water resources, and shelter and advances in “off the grid” technologies will be highlighted at our conference, ” said School of Engineering and Computing Sciences Dean Nada Marie Anid. “Experts in topics ranging from emergency response to global health will present a range of solutions for a variety of areas, from rural communities in the United States to remote disaster-stricken areas in the poorest parts of the globe.”
Dr. Edward Gotfried, director of NYIT’s Center for Global Health, will discuss the challenges of working in the undeveloped world, where access to electricity and clean water are key concerns.
“I’m going to put a picture on the problems we face in the underdeveloped world,” said Gotfried. “The point of my presentation is to talk about what happens when the undeveloped or developing world faces problems as simple as no clean water.”
Keynote speaker Rich Rotanz, executive director of the Applied Science Foundation for Homeland Security, will challenge the conference participants about their understanding of the preparations necessary for emergencies.
“Do you have a preparedness plan for home and work?” he asked, noting that residents must be proactive and also understand that a “response” to an emergency must start, in the form of adequate planning, before the event actually occurs.
Steve Apelman, president of Macro Electronics, will discuss the technology used in the design of one of his company’s emergency shelters. The shelters offer indoor waterless toilets and have solar and wind-turbine elements to generate lighting.
“The psychology of the whole (disaster) event needs to be addressed when you build someone a shelter,” Apelman says.“People need peace, security, and safety.”
Other experts at the conference include:
Power Panel
Hollice Stone, Stone Security Engineering
David Schieren, EmPower Solar
Stephen Boyd, Aufbau Labs
Shelter Panel
NYIT Architecture professor Jason Van Nest, who will discuss NYIT’s School of Architecture and Design’s water-bottle roofing project (provisional patent)
Peter Williams, founder and executive director of ARCHIVE
Steve Apelman, Macro Electronics
Water Panel
David Abecassis, Biogard Inc.
Mickey Ingles, WorldWater & Solar Technologies
Ram Venkatadri, Pall Corp.
