Solar “Death Ray”: Power of 5000 suns!

The R5800 is my latest and greatest solar creation. Made from an ordinary fiberglass satellite dish, it is covered in about 5800 3/8″ (~1cm) mirror tiles. When properly aligned, it can generate a spot the size of a dime with an intensity of 5000 times normal daylight. This intensity of light is more than enough to melt steel, vaporize aluminum, boil concrete, turn dirt into lava, and obliterate any organic material in an instant. It stands at 5’9″ and is 42″ across. Unfortunately, the R5800 was completely destroyed in a storage shed fire on December 14, 2010. music: “hypnothis” www.incompetech.com provided under creative commons liscence Coming spring of 2011: Sun Runner 3 R23000 (R23K) Area of dish aperture (elliptical)= (pi x 102cm x 73cm)/4 = 5848 sq cm Area of focal point (circular)= pi(0.6cm)^2 = 1.14 sq cm Concentration Power= 5848/1.14 = 5129 then rounded down Output Power Estimate = 560 watts

I wonder how powerful it is on a cloudy day. Or even indoors. It should still make the focal point pretty hot.

  4. petrmej says:

The surface of the dish isn’t hot. The only very hot place is in the focal point (as can also be seen in the video) – that’s because all the light reflected by the dish concentrates there.

I see we have an expert over here…
Keep in mind the device has about the same power output as a microwave oven. It will cook flesh about as fast as a microwave reheats a frozen dinner: however, it has a more precise target area.

No, the cover would prevent the sun’s rays from reaching the mirrors in the first place. When you had it where you wanted it, then you could step away from in front of it and pull the cover off, with no worries. Beware of pointing it at reflective surfaces, though. If a mirror was held at the focal point, the reflected beam may or may not be strong enough, several feet away, to start a fire, but probably will still blind you.

But wouldn’t any cover just melt?

  11. neoneoneocortex says:

I would have some sort of cover over it until I had it in place and aimed. An accident could be instantly fatal, or cause permanent blindness, disfigurement, brain damage, loss of the ability to walk, etc. It also might hurt others in the immediate area, animals, etc. I have seen the power of forced air furnaces, plasma cutters, etc. As there is no noise to warn you it’s “on”, it’s less safe. Please keep my suggestion in mind, it would also keep the mirrors from getting dusty. Keep safe!

thats h=just just so frickin awsome but waste of money unless hes rich and he can buy a new one!!!!!(:

Theoretically, the maximum possible temperature would be equal to the temperature of the surface of the sun (10,000 F), which is well above the boiling point of any material on earth.

  19. genericity says:

could you have attached mirrors and lenses to make it possible to aim at different targets?

you should make an even stronger one and try it

  20. genericity says:

    only metal ants

  21. AnnVole says:

no, the parabolic dish antenna already has the right shape so they are automatically at the right angle as long as they are small enough

This still surprise me, just how many people are not aware about Xobotano Home Energy (just google it), even though many people save huge amounts of money with this alternative energy. Thanks to my mate who told me about Xobotano Home Energy, I’ve slashes my electric bill by 75% in under 1 month
