Charlestown Wind

Charlestown Wind Turbine facts: 364′ high to top of blade 1.5 MW Turbine 3 Million KW hours/year 0000 Annual savings on electricity. Power generated will net-metered to offset MWRA electricity costs. .7M in stimulus money – fully funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Design/build contract awarded in December 2009 to Lumus Construction. With wind, solar and hydro and biogas, The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority currently utilizes nearly 14 megawatts of renewable energy with 3.7 megawatts more under construction and more on the way. At Deer Island alone, MWRA self-generates 23% of the plant’s electricity needs, and, by using the methane produced in sewage treatment, over 50% of the total energy demand. MWRA has been recognized for “Outstanding Leadership in the Public Sector” by the Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance and received the “Leading by Example” award from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs. I live in Charlestown and didn’t even notice the project until my wife pointed it out to me. Well done and it looks spectacular!

    Genial reportaje, muchas gracias

Very, very cool. I wish we got to see it operate! 😉

Hang around a wind turbine at night time and see what falls from the sky – let’s just say there are a lot of fat foxes, by coincidence of course, in the same areas.

Subsonic rumbling is quite a novel effect – I wonder how the constant vibration and the rattling of crockery effects human health – not to mention the observed migration of tea cups across your kitchen table.

Nice video, I’m posting it on my fan page! Check out my video if you get a chance.

Bummer this has glossed over the serious EMR issues 🙁
good effort other than that !

@bccutube Err… if they were ‘downwind’ versions the blade profile would be reversed. Sorry… the animation is incorrect, not that it matters…. As for the ‘Wind turbine syndrome’ – a load of tosh. It seems to be absent in people who profit by having them on their land.

  12. bccutube says:

@nitramluap, they could be the old-style downwind turbines. Maybe the animator don’t know much about physics… or maybe you don’t know much about turbine design! 😛

  13. flyingpigstuff says:

@nitramluap Australian wind turbines spin the usual way, it’s just your point of view. They are upside down actually.

  14. FriendsOfTheEarthAUS says:

@nitramluap haha your right, I just noticed

The proven cure is $. No one who receives $ has ever complained!!

  16. ChuffChuffWoo says:

Cheap Japanese atomic power is the way forward!!! ;-)) Since the wind farm was built near here a few years ago, I’ve started to get grey hair and a bit fatter, Im nearly 50 (therefore I conclude that wind farms cause middle age!;-))

  17. ChuffChuffWoo says:

We need to dtop the cynical mass manufacturing and marketing of anti wind energy lies in an industrial scale my those with hidden agendas.

  18. nitramluap says:

I love the way the turbines are spinning the wrong way! Animators don’t know much about physics!

Awesome video! Its really important to start getting the facts out there and having a good dialogue. And @astrixstar, the World Health Organisation *is* a government organisation… they are a part of the UN, of which Australia is a member state.

  20. astrixstar says:

I don’t think its unreasonable. The studies into windfarm syndrome haven’t been conducted by a government body yet. To assume the instances of the syndrome are unsubstantiated because no data exists; without doing the study is irresponsible. If people are complaining I think its good that governments are moving quickly for once rather than reacting when its too late (like oil cracking, tobacco etc). I’m glad you’re moving forward on explaining the science a little more.

  21. astrixstar says:

The human body resonates at an average of 12hz (between 0 and 20hz). Alot of old temples (in many places on earth) appear to have been built to utilise and enhance Infrasound. I saw a doco once where the presenter waved fan in front of the entrance, enough to create 90db at around 12hz. I did a little googling and found that Infrasound from wind turbines are recorded at around 90db. Im all for wind farms by the way, I just hope they work around this issue ethically.

    Good work guys!
