Question by Curiosity: For homeowners: if space wasn’t an issue, would you want to install a solar/wind power system for $6,000?
I’m thinking of installing a system and just wondered if others out there are thinking it’s feasible and what a reasonable price for a system is to you.

Do I have the money? Nope. $ 6,000 could be used for so many other things. I think it would be great if I just had money to spare, but I don’t.

Yes, $6,000 is a steal of a deal. If space is not an issue, The Solar DIY Wind Power system is the way to go !
There are hybrid models with both wind turbine and solar panels built in, otherwise, set up your own project to build one for your home’s energy consumption right within your property.

YES. you can sell back power to the energy companys too. plus when the communists take over you will be the only one on the block with power for your flat screen and playstation.

I definitely would. It would pay for itself in a couple of years, you would be off the grid, and depending where you live, there may be incentives 🙂 Also, it depends on where you live, if you have enough wind, and sun to soley power your home, there are maps on this subject on google.

I think it would depend on if your site has a reasonable amount of resource. Is there good wind, have you tested it or checked the wind resource sites on the web? Do you have uninhibited sunlight all day or is it just part of the day, you have to figure for summer and winter sun levels also.

solar/wind energy system will never pay for themselves in less than 20 years, not 2 years. A 1000megawatt wind farm being planned (remember, the larger the system, the cheaper they become) in CA has a 20 year payout.
A $ 6000 system is a 1KW PV panel or a 500 watt wind turbine. They will make about 150KW-hrs of electricity per month, worth about $ 15 off you power bill.

Somehow I think such a system that could actually provide enough power would cost more like $ 60,000. At that kind of price I’d rather spew out pollution. I would not pay for an under-sized system that only works part of the time.

We just finished a cost analysis of installing sufficient number of solar panels on our house that would generate 70 to 80% of our annual electrical consumption. The total cost, including installation of such a system ranged between $ 25,000 and $ 30,000.
At $ 30,000 we concluded that it would take 11.6 years to pay for the system, which include tax incentives and rebates, and longer when we add in variables such as loss of interest income or finance charges.
Although we would love to install such a system, it just doesn’t make economic sense for us at this time. We then looked augmenting; generating 10% or less of our annual consumption with solar panels and pretty much derived at a similar conclusion.
The home owner association will permit solar panels, but does not allow wind energy, thus we did not evaluate wind energy.
In closing, we will continue monitoring the solar panel industry in the hope that in the future these systems will become an attractive energy source, but to answer your question; “currently, we would not invest $ 6,000 for a solar/wind power system”.
