Inaccurate Weather Forecast Means Trouble for Unprepared Homeowners

The first Atlantic tropical storm of 2012 was an eye opener for many complacent residents of the southern Atlantic coast. As first reported by weather forecasters, Beryl became a named storm with wind speed of 45 mph and wasn’t expected to increase prior to moving on shore (NOAA.org). Unfortunately, Mother Nature disagreed with the weather forecasters and Beryl increased in speed and plowed into Jacksonville with wind speeds exceeding 70 mph (just shy of a category 1 hurricane). These high tropical force winds caused power outages throughout the southern Georgia and northern Florida Atlantic coast line affecting more than 30,000 residents. Power has been restored but this event raised a red flag for those living in these Tropical Storm and Hurricane prone areas to be prepared for the next big storm.
