Q&A: About solar-wind hybrid system?

Question by Deepti: About solar-wind hybrid system?
how can we combine ac supply from two sources to supply a common load? say, two sources are two separate inverters. Is there any device called “AC Combination Box”?

Yes there are circuits for bringing two supply sources to supply one load. You can in the net.

You need grid tie inverters which are designed to be synchronized with an AC voltage on a distribution buss. You cannot just connect AC voltages from different sources without matching the voltage, frequency and phase of the incoming AC with that of the AC on the buss.

Then once AC sources are paralleled you need to control the flow of power from the individual sources so that they share the load (Balance) within their capabilities.

With generators this is done by using isochronous governors with speed droop capability to operate the throttle of the prime mover. The governors control the throttles which in turn controls the mechanical power to the generator which inturn controls the electrical power the generator provides.

For Grid Tie inverters, there is additional circuitry which provides this functionality of load monitoring and balance.

When dealing with a Hybrid system (Solar / Wind / Hydro) it is far easier to combine the DC power each system provides to charge batteries. Then only one grid tie inverter is necessary to convert battery power to AC and parallel with the grid. Of course this requires that you use batteries to store the “Green” power.

If you want to go with a battery less system then each system would have its own grid tie inverter. Technically this would not be a hybrid system but separate systems paralleled onto the grid.
