A Solar Power System | How difficult is it to make solar panels to generate electric for my home?

Question by taraff1: How difficult is it to make solar panels to generate electric for my home?
I’ve looked into making solar panels for my home and the information at http://make-solar-panels-earth-4-energy.weebly.com/ says it’s easy and inexpensive? Is it really? Have you ever used Earth4Energy?

Sounds like a scam to me. They say you can build and hook up a solar panel for about $ 200 but they do not say how much power it will generate. You may end up with a $ 200 system that will only power one light bulb. Solar power is a promising technology but at this point it is more expensive than getting power from your local utility company.

You might be able to make hydronic, (water heating), panels.
You will not be able to make photo-voltaic, (electric generating), panels.
Note that the advertisement you cite cleverly talks about ‘bills’ and
‘energy’ without specifying the energy to be produced.
A solar water heater is a possible DIY project.
    Solar electric panels are not.

taraff1 have you forgotten that you “tried Earth4Energy, and for the most part it worked pretty well!”?

BTW: Having your user name match your affiliate id probably isn’t the most stealth way to execute your little scam.

To recap – you could make hydronic panels. Heat water – produce steam pressure – turn a turbine – make electricity. But you would probably only produce a very small amount of electricity.

    Photo-voltaic cells – you can’t make these.

Truth is that hydronic electricity is a very cost effective means of creating electricity if you live in a very sunny environment and have a few acres to cover. This is an economy of scale situation.

But you can easily make a water heater that can produce heat that offsets your current energy costs – thus reducing your electricity consumption. Heat is energy and my guess is that this site helps you make “energy” not electricity. If this is what you want – ask again and someone can point you to some free plans. Think of a garden hose left out in the sun. The water in the hose is going to be hot. This is the basic principle of a hydronic hot water heater (redundant, I know).

Enough of the spam! Solar panels are awesome though, I have been assembling (not making) them for quite a while. Its worth it in the long run.

It is not to hard to make it. You will have to buy solar panels and connect them with your house… if you are good with tools you may be able to do it on your own so the only cost would be solar panels.
