SCI-Arc/Caltech’s Solar Decathlon 2011 Video Walkthrough

USDepartment of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 teams each produced a video walk-through to highlight their house design and provide an accurate look at the interior. This video, produced in August 2011 by The Southern California Institute of Architecture and California Institute of Technology, will be judged as part of the Communications Contest for the Solar Decathlon competition, held in Washington, DC, September 23 — October 2, 2011.     @imakez4u I saw the house in D.C. and the vinyl is actually pretty thick. Experimentation with other skin materials could yield interesting results. I hear what you’re saying about trees, etc., but there are some great ideas here. In fact, the entire competition was filled with a lot of ingenuity and imagination. It will be exciting to see when and in what form ideas from here become mainstream.

    But seriously … the exterior covering is soft right..? the first tree branch that touches it would rip through .. right..? I do like the way the exterior looks… The restraining cabling grid pattern looks good. I suppose you could spray the exterior with a hardining resin to make it rigid…

    That was so cool. I think in the future, if this project goes good, you should think about making the house a bit bigger. You know, for a second bedroom..for the kids. Anyhow, that looked really awesome! Good Job

    The outer vinyl covering for the house…??? Is it durable..??? how long would the exterior covering last..????
